Each partition will run its own version of OS/400. Currently, they have to all
be
at the same release, but that will change in time. So each partition can have
its own set of system values, disks, user profiles, and everything else that
goes
along with a "stand-alone" machine. You will assign controllers, CPUs, and
disks to each partition. That is the way it will handle allocation of devices.
As for how software vendors will handle it, is up to each vendor. Supposedly,
each partition will receive a letter at the end of the serial number, denoting
the difference. So, if the your vendors authorization routines use the serial
number of allow you to use their product, there may be some licensing issues.

Its too bad that IBM didnt come out with this 2 years ago, think of how
usefull this would have been for Y2K testing. One thing to note is that you
need
an N-way processor CPU to take advantage of LPAR (except the 2 way model 170
doesnt have the 2nd disc controller to be to take advantage of this). Perhaps
they had this technology, but just wanted to sell more Y2K test machines, so
they
didnt bring it to market?
