We use IBM 3590s and 3490s and are very happy with both. BCC tried a
VERY hard sell to get us to buy their Sony AIT drives. They sent us 2 on
a trial basis. I hooked them up but they would not work concurrently.
One at a time, yes they worked. They also provide software called SCATS
which is supposed to work with their AITS and 3590s too and allows the
save operation to strip objects from the lib being saved and send them
to different drives for backup. (It strips the objects out by size. The
largest goes to one drive, the second largest to another, etc.)
The Sony units are built well. I cannot guarantee they did not work
concurrently for us as being a problem with the units. It could be I did
not configure them properly.
Their claim is that these units are actually installed and maintained by
IBM - not BCC or anybody else. Also, their small size is a plus.
We are still going to give them a second try.

Ash.
