Printers at multiple remote sites; but near each other

I need to connect 3-5 remote sites (all within 5 miles each other, but a long
distance from the AS/400) so we can run high speed twinax attached impact
printers.

In the past, I have connected up single remote locations with a 5394
controller, but I am wondering if there is a better solution giving that the
remote sites are all so close.  

Can I install a single controller at one of the locations, then connect the
other sites to the 'central' site?  What kind of equipment would I be looking
for?
