I'm not disputing whether or not the full licensed version is better.
But how many times have we seen a rookie RPG student ask about a PC
editor for RPG?

I could see this being a *big* benefit to students trying to learn
RPG. They get prompted specifications, online help, color coding,
syntax checking (albeit not the full verifier), intelligent cursor
movement, indented opcode display, etc Think of what that could mean
to someone trying to write an assignment at home on their PC!

Assuming the instructor has the full blown license, he could maybe
even setup his local cache directory to include external database file
definitions and offer the cache to the students. Then they might even
be able to run the program verifier on some programs (obviously
external display and printer files the students design as part of the
assignment would not be cached -- at least until the next class). The
verifier may be beyond the bounds of what IBM would like to see the
"free" version used for. But even if the verifier was disabled, the
base editor would be a *boon* to students.

If I were an instructor or student, I'd want to find out if this usage
would be sanctioned by IBM. Gee, if IBM suggested students use the
base editor, you can bet they wouldn't want to use SEU for everything
once they got a real job! It might even help drive VARPG sales.

Along the same lines, sanctioning the evalution copy for longer than
30 days for offline use might get more people hooked if they didn't
have to wait for budget timing considerations to utilize the editor.
Of course the full version is better, but for "free", the base editor
is still way ahead of using SEU (IMHO of course).
