Sannan,

    We have a 3rd party 8mm tape, which is defined to our CISC system as a 9348
(I think because it connects to a 2621 Mag tape controller).  We can write tapes
on that device and ship them out to various customers who have 8mm devices.  We
can also read any 8MM tape that is sent to us.  I beleive we can do this all
because we leave the tape in the "Low density" format, and dont switch it to 
High
density.

    So, I dont see much difference between our two scenarios.  If you would like
