In this case then it is hard to recommend.  Probably they should find some hot 
and handy database or spreadsheeet program then, and just treat the AS400 as 
peripheral disk stores.  With as general a direction as they have given you, it 
would appear to me that their real goal is to get everything into a spreadsheet 
anyway, so why not just do it?  The real challenge for them, in my opinion, is 
to learn about what they already have with the DB/2 database on the AS/400.
