We encountered some problems using FTP to download data
from "folders" on the AS/400 too...

Our solution was to "bag" FTP and use the new V4 NetServer function.

Now my users are able to access their AS/400 "folder" data as easy as 
any data they might have on an NT server...

It is great! If you are at V4R2 or 3 I'd highly recommend checking this
out.
