How about the fact that PCs are over 17 years old? Comparing a modern AS/400
model 640 to an early AS/400 model B10 is like comparing a modern Pentium II
PC to an early 8086 PC. Both cases are a very good example of apples to
oranges.

Why is the PC considered "modern" and the AS/400 is considered "antiquated"?
My guess is that there has been a noticeable change in the user interface of
the PC over the last 17 years, whereas the AS/400 user interface has pretty
much retained the same character-based look-and-feel since the early days of
computing. Everybody wants a GUI, they just don't know why. I can tell you
why: Microsoft told them that they wanted a GUI. Never mind the fact that in
most instances of data entry, a character-based session is much more
productive than a GUI session.

Just my observations from my "sheltered cubicle" perspective. ;-)

Because the AS/400 has been around for 10+ years, it is perceived as old. It
has changed with the time quite well, but most people don't know this.
That's
too bad.
