It depends....  :)

By *NOMAX you're saying that there's no upper limit on the number of
records the file can hold.  Keep in mind tha this is a safety valve that
keeps you from having a runaway program (not that anyone on this list
would write one) from going ape and taking your DASD to 100+% and crashing
your system...  Trust me, restoring from a 100% DASD box can be a full
restore...sometimes you'll get lucky and a IPL will clear enough work
space that you can clr/dlt the offending space and come up normally...

But, in terms of space, performance, etc.,....  No disadvantages taht I'm
aware of....
