they do? you may be in luck! ras is 'remote access server', and there are two
types, either a function of windows nt (server)
or a stand alone unit.

the hardware stand alone units plug into the lan, and allow connection into the
lan, which the as/400 is a part of.

we used the ibm 8235, which was discontinued last summer, but it was really a
shiva lanrover. they start at a little over $1000
for a two port unit, and can go up to huge. we have gotten the 8 port units
with internal modems - and that costs a little more,
but it's really neat, with no modem cables or plugs.

once you know what you're doing, you can configure the thing in minutes. but i
must admit, the first one i did took a couple of
days!

we have 5 or so customers with them installed, and i got one for us, i liked it
so well. now i can work from home, and the
response time for interactive work is almost like being on line. and with
client access v3r1m3 i can even print! transfers take
a bit longer, but this past weekend i upgraded some programs, and it took maybe
2 minutes to transfer a 4000 line program.
(almost like twinax)
