We run ours in "split" mode. We installed a second drive so that there are two
cables going into the back of the 3570. Tape operations can be done
simultaneously using both drives. The picker is shared between the two drives.

There are vendors out there selling devices that purport to allow sharing of a
single drive between two AS/400s. As I recall, it was fairly expensive,
although cheaper than buying the second drive.

We opted for ease of use and reduced chance of quirky problems over the
potential up front cost savings.

Subject: Magstar 3570 tape library info

Folks:

I'm looking for some information on the IBM 3570 tape library unit.

I've worked with the device and like it a lot... but only in a single
system senario. I'm currently in a multiple system environment and need
to get some information.

My questions are...

1. Can the device be shared amoung multiple AS/400's?
2. If so, how is this done? I know it's a SCSI device, is it possible
to move the unit from system to system.
3. If it can't be easily shared, do you know of software that will allow
network backup's of one AS/400 to a device on another system
(Robot/Save???)?

TIA!

david
