We also have a Magstar Media tape drive.  It is indeed capable of doing
what you want.

However!  It is not easy. It should be, but it isn't.

The manuals are confusing.  If you understand the concepts they make sense,
if you don't they are no help. 

Support doesn't understand and will try to sell you the library management
system.  They were of little or no help.  

This is one of those situations where you have been sold something and are
told "OH! You want it to work.  That will cost extra."  I don't like this
concept.

So, I developed my own crude library management system.  It does what I
want which is very close to what you proposed to do.
