you could pass a flag back from the called program and use it to determine
whether or not to RESET the data structure (or would a CLEAR work here)

        Hi all,
Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful replies. This particular
externally
defined DS is returned from a called program. If the data that is
supposed to
reside in the returned DS exists, it is cycled back, if the data
doesn't exist
the DS comes back empty from the called program. And this is the
problem. I am
not sure that doing the initilization to zeros would work for every
repetitive
call cycles, maybe I have to go to the source and just be sure the
returned data
is initialized properly from the called program.

As for the size of the field you are all right. A 3 byte packed
will be
X'12345F', but it is just being z-add'd to a bigger field. Sorry
for any
        confusion this caused.

        Thanks again!
        Tim Truax
