in a sort of related note - in trying to install an HP 8GB external tape
drive, I was instructed by HP support to run the RegClean program from the
Microsoft web site. It looks like it "cleaned" a bunch of Client Access
entries. Now, Operations Navigator searches unsuccessfully for devices
each time I run it - but as I don't use it that often on this machine,
that's OK.

Irritating isn't it. I've always found it in the registry (REGEDIT). I
don't remember if it's in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER, but the
subkey (I think) is SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run (and
RunServices). IBM puts some trash in there that's completely useless.
Export the key to a text file just in case. Delete whatever looks like you
may not need it and reboot. If it doesn't work, import the key you saved
and try again. Be careful not to change anything else though. You can
always reinstall CA, but there is stuff in the registry that could make you
reinstall NT if you messed it up (Been there. Not pretty. Takes 3 days to
get it all working again.)
