RE: 10 Newbie hurdles.From a MAC user to an A/S400 user

I can sympathize with your frustrations, and I'm sure the news that 
many of those problems wouldn't exist if you purchased a new AS/400 
with the current software level isn't much comfort !   :-)

1)      Sounds like the control panel/clock battery had become discharged.
        Did you get many manuals with the system ?

2)      Looks like the old system wasn't "cleaned up" before you got it.

5)      Well, as you've discovered, V2R3 is about 6 releases behind and you 
can't get that stuff from IBM anymore.
        You can run your system on V3R2, but you'd have to pay for the 
upgrade.

6)      You probably do need to find the Application Development Tools - 
somewhere !  ;-)

10)     TCP/IP on a V2 system ?  Forget it.  It was a billable extra charge 
piece of code back on V2.
        It's included with OS/400 for V3.  I'd suggest you investigate 
acquiring V3R2 for the system.
        You may find out it would be cheaper to get a brand new V4R3 RISC 
Model 150 (pretty much ALL the software is      included with it).

As a Newbie one is presented with a lot of problems to get started.
1:Power on AS/400 for first time/BBBB/-batt warning message(Leave on
and message will disappear after 5-10 mins(Not in manual)-Setting up
correct terminal
address 0/0 before you can get a log on

2:After my first  IPL finding out you cant log on to the system-ops no
password.(Try finding any manual or book which tells you to do a manual
IPL and reset password by DST back to QSECOFR)

3:Buying the right books-so many choices out there. I purchased:

4:Which book to start with-only to find  no ADT on your AS/400
5:How to get ADT for V2R3 AS400 E20
Im running V2.3 on my 9404-E20 24meg/3 gig DASD and have the following
installed Licensed Programs
OS/400-Library QGPL
OS/400-Library QUSRSYS
Operating System/400
OS/400-Extended base support
OS/400-Online Education
OS/400-Online information
PC Support/400
PC Support/400-PC DOS Programs
Query/400

6:Giving up any hope of ever getting a ADT toolkit that old and trying
to find a PC ADT product that would work on my system--where do you
start?

7:Trying to configure Netsoft Portfollio and a CLI (Computer Lab Intl)
5250 card on your PC after finding the ethernet card on the E20 
missing.

8:Researching more books from Computerliteracy or Amazon and trying not
to buy a turkey!

9:Trying to find old reviews tips on the web for the E20--hardly
anything out there
Learning how to handle tapes,tapedrive and storing tapes correctly and
BUPs.AS/400,how to take apart safely to clean out dust.

10:Trying to learn to be a SYSOP, SYSADMIN, CA ,RPG, DB2/400
Programmer-what about
TCP/IP--not installed on my machine-Where do I get that from?


A lot to learn: but Im never seen a system that is so much fun-its 
seems
to me to be
really special just like the Macintosh once was.
