boy i don't know..  i've never used the ibm protocol convertor, but
we've used some others.

they were good in their day (1980's), but there would be some
limitations.

1. the terminal emulation is crummy.  you'd have to use something
like hyperterminal or procomm.

2. i'm not sure if it hooks to a comm line or a twinax line
3. setting it up could be tricky.  no documentation!
4. the interface with current modems may not work as expected.
