Updating from CL can be a unique opportunity. You can use the Query Management
Facility by passing parameters to it.

CRTSRCPF lib/QQMQRYSRC
Use your editor to make one line in a member, in our sample let's pretend the
member is called qmqry.
UPDATE library/file SET fielda = &value WHERE fieldb = &selection
CRTQMQRY QMQRY(library/qmqry) SRCFILE(library/QQMQRYSRC)

Then in your CL place the following:
...
DCL &VAR1 ...
DCL &VAR1Q ...
DCL &VAR2 ...
DCL &VAR21 ...
DCL VAR(&APOS) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(1) /* +
             Apostrophe */
CHGVAR VAR(&APOS) VALUE(X'7D')
...
CHGVAR VAR(&VAR1Q) VALUE(&APOS *TCAT &VAR1 +
             *TCAT &APOS)
CHGVAR VAR(&VAR2Q) VALUE(&APOS *TCAT &VAR2 +
             *TCAT &APOS)
STRQMQRY QMQRY(library/qmqry) SETVAR((value &VAR1Q) +
             (selection &VAR2Q))
...

You all got it?

Subject: Updating Database files with a CL program

Hello,
I am just curious if someone can answer a stupid question for me. I
need to update a Database Feild and want to know if I can do that with OPNQRYF
in a CL or if I will have to code it in COBOL to access the Database. Thanks
