Joe,

  I have a customer with exactly the same setup and is planning the same
upgrade.  There are really few issues to deal with here except the
changing system serial number.  This means two things: 1) Re-license
applications (can be ENOURMOUS $$$s for example MAPICS is 4 times the
price of the hardware!!! and that's from a top end 436 to the middle
170) and 2) When the user profiles are restored all the *ALLOBJ
attributes will be stripped - you'll have to put them back. The 436 is
already RISC so that's not an issue. Most 436 and 170s will have
compatible tape by default. (But be like Reagan-Trust but Verify)  All
V4R2 and up machines can run internal SSP machines (you must order the
SSP code) so that is not a problem either.

  The SSP will just come over as a couple objects in a library.  You may
have to map a few devices since the 170 base controller has only 4 ports
and the 436 base has 8, but that's only if you have more than 4 ports of
twinax left.
