Glenn,

Nope...  and I'm really not crazy.  It really happened :)

I used the WRKCTLD command option 3 to copy the controller.  That's
when the line description dissappeared.  I used F6 on the WRKLIND
command to create the new line, and the WRKCTLD option 2 to change the
new controller to go to the new (same) line.  That's when the other
controller disappeared.  

It's the damndest thing I've seen in a long time.  I'll bet I couldn't
duplicate it.
