They are the Highest and Lowest data values that can be stored in the field.

In RPG you use the special values *HIVAL and *LOVAL.

You can MOVE    *HIVAL      FIELDHI
              MOVE    *LOVAL    FIELDLO

or

FIELD1      IFEQ    FIELDHI
process
                   ENDIF

etc...

Most likely the database file is sorted on these fields
*HIVAL would be sorted after everything else in an ascending sequence
*LOVAL before anything else...

If you moved *Blanks or *Zeros to the fields they would not sort the same way...

The work fields in your program should be defined the same way as the database
fields
normally with the *LIKE special value.

*LIKE      DEFN   DataBaseField          FIELDHI
                 MOVE *HIVAL                   FIELDHI
