NetServer is part of OS/400 since V4R2. Check out chapter 7 'Connecting AS/400
to a TCP/IP Environment using NetServer' of the book 'Getting your AS/400
Working for You.' It is available at
http://as400bks.rochester.ibm.com/bookmgr/home.htm
It should be on the CD they sent you. I am not sure if it is still part of the
paper books.

I do not know what it's performance attributes are. It's supposed to blow the
doors off of Client Access. I hear it will be an even better performer in V4R3.

Is the Timberline construction software multiuser? Are you going to start
having problems putting it on shared disk? There are some things that us
midrange people take for granted: record locks, etc.

I'll give you an example of one PC software that warns you about using shared
disk - Notes. When you run Notes your server processes the requests through
programs running on the server. In AS/400 terms, all of the data is owned by
QNOTES. All of the users submit requests to certain programs running under
QNOTES. If you create a new Notes database it will be owned by QNOTES
automatically and all access will be done with these programs. If you get a
hacker that creates a database and thinks the Notes Administrator asks too many
questions they might put their local database on a shared drive, either on
their PC or on another. When they start sharing the data corruption will
occur. Documented and announced, even this example. PC data should normally
be accessed by one user, (or task), at a time. There might be exceptions but
it has to be in the base design.

This is for Timberline construction software. It is a full accounting
package based on Windows. Our database is approx 400mb. These files
use timberline's own database structure and will have heavy i/o usage as
transactions are entered/updated. Because of the file structures a
server that is able to efficiently cache these files will be much
faster. We are thinking along the lines of 256mb+ memory.

What is NetServer 400? Does it cache efficiently or not?
