In general I believe the standard should be "anything keyed since the last
Enter is lost."  If that is in place system wide then everyone learns it
quickly.  Even if a few exceptions could be justified with efficiency my 
experience is that an iron-clad rule like that is more effective in the
end.

btw, wouldn't the command key processing be a part of the READ logic
anyway?
