Here are some options (I'm brainstorming here.  I have NOT thought about 
the performance ramifications...)

1. Use embedded SQL in your RPG program to SELECT the proper record from 
the QADSPFFD outfile.
2. Use the file description API to retrieve the field names into a user 
space rather than the outfile.
3. Use a "preprocessor" to send the lib/file/field names to an indexed 
DTAQ.
