The good news is:

IBM had been on a course to allow DASD to DASD pump.

The bad news is:

I've seen so few failed DASD recently (either by virtue of pure
reliability, or RAID-5 or mirroring), that I am no longer current on this
topic.  I have forwarded this note to IBM (hopefully) for a response.
