The part that concerns me about loading the cum tape and doing the IPL later is
this. Many of the cover letters of the PTF's say something like 'You must get
everyone out of product ... prior to doing the load and apply of this PTF'.

Which gets me onto another subject - nonimmediate immediate PTF's. For
example, PTF's that says that they are immediate but you must get everyone out
of Client Access, (or off the lan, or whatever). "Let's see, I've got one
twinax terminal and over a hundred users using PC's via token ring. Well, I
guess that now makes this a delayed PTF."

Well, -I- never realized that you could do it. And IBM never really
emphasized the capability (ie "If you wanna, you can load this stuff now
and IPL later").

The PTF procedure has always been a 'guru function' around here: we make a
Pilgrimage to The Computer Room, take over the machine(s), and weave
incantations over the Black Boxes for several hours.

Thinking back, the instructions have mentioned something about "If you
choose not to IPL now, remember to do so for the PTFs to take effect" for
some time.

It's only recently when there's so much to do and not enough time to do it
that I've started (read 'been forced to try') loading PTFs ahead of time
(ie Wednesday for the Saturday IPL), and letting the Operators do a 'long
IPL.'

It's also the only way to handle remote AS/400s! (:
