This perception is very widespread in our business, too (independent 
telephone companies.)

This perception is kept alive by the fact that we have our own vocabulary, 
isolated from the software industry as a whole.  The lack of cross 
pollination just strengthens the outsider's view that the box is 
proprietary and doesn't integrate well into the mixed environment of 
Dec/HP/NT machines that the rest of the world uses.
