I had to convert some packed fields from a mainframe flat file several years 
ago, and had to examine each for a C in the sign nibble and replace that with a 
D in order to make it work. Otherwise, I think I just got a data decimal 
exception (this was V2R2). As I recall, I did this by positionally parsing the 
fields and using the SCAN opcode to see if the rightmost byte was in the 
constant X'0C1C2C3C4C5C6C7C8C9C', then using MLLZO to replace it if necessary. 
It wasn't pretty, but it did work.
