Yep, I've extensively modified the startup pgm before and it works fine. 
Your messages may be going to qsysopr msgq. You can also check to see 
nothing too complicated is happening through the strup pgm and then put 
it in debug and run it interactively on a cmd line. Usually, the strup 
pgm is just starting sbs and writers.  If you don't want to put it in 
debug, you can still run it and display your joblog. That will give you 
detailed messages about what is happening.
