John,

It depends on the how you intend to send the mail. For under $2000 you
probably don't have much time to read the documentation that describes sending
mail. You can use the SNDDST command to send really ugly mail and attachments.
You do not need to start the POP server. But you will need to start the SMTP
server. I am not sure if you have to start the MSF server to use SNDDST. You
also have to set up the system distribution queues unless you are on V4R2. On
V4R2 you can specify an internet address. There are examples of this sort of
thing in the manual found at:
http://as400bks.rochester.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr/BookMgr.cmd/BOOKS/SG244703/CCONTENTS.

You can also use the MSF APIs to send much better formatted E-mail but that
will take you some time. Probably more than $2000 worth. I you are interested
let me know and I may be able to help you with the format of the parameters and
using the APIs.

I would like to send e-mail from an AS400 Application to a certain
internet e-mail account.

For example a nightly batch job would create a one page report and then
e-mail to various accounts.

What do I need to accomplish this. It is a small project so there isn't
a budget to go out and spend $2000 just to provide these reports.

We have an inhouse mail server (linux) and an internet connection.

Do we need to run SMTP on our 400 or is there a POP client we can use.
