ObjectConnect is a FREE optional part(part 22) of OS/400 from V3R2 up. It
is a fantastic way to get objects around
a network. It obsoleted some programs many of have written to
save-send-restore objects.

ObjectConnect has been around since V2R3. It was delayed in coming to the
market place. IBM's original design is that this was users were going to
move from CISC to RISC when using side-by-side.
I am not aware that it was moved from fee to free, but this would be a good
move for IBM. Every time IBM puts out another chargeable part of OS/400,
they shoot themselves in the foot.
