>>> About VaRPG: I haven't been able to get it to actually connect yet for a
lot of reasons, including the major reason of my not really being a guru
of anything, certainly not of AS/400 connectivity.

Glad to hear that your new copy arrived. That makes it easier since the old
version required client access to connect and you had to battle your way
through the Netsoft router. I never did get that all to work without help
from people who understood such things. However, I did get the TCP/IP
connection for both VARPG and Code/400 working alone and unassisted with the
new version - I was so proud of myself !! Only problems I experieced were that
a) I had to get all the required PTFs loaded on the AS/400 (they are listed in
the read me files) and b) on the systems that I have used so far I had to use
the PC's IP address (rather than it's name) when doing STRCODE to get the
server running for Code/400. Since you appear to be mostly interested in VARPG
this should not be a problem.

>>> About Java... I understood we'd get the enterprise edition with our new
box last October, but it never showed up. Are you suggesting that VAJ is
something that is easier to start frrom scratch with than is JBuilder?

If you supply me with the Customer number, delivery date, and machine serial
number, I'll check if you were due to receive one. If it turns out you were
due, then I'll make sure you get a copy. As to it being easier - well I
wouldn't say that but it does provide some AS/400 specific pieces that are
useful and the tutorial that comes with it is excellent. You are after all
learning OO design/analysis/programming and a brand new tool all in one go, so
it's not going to be a ten minute process. To switch completely from a
procedural langauge to OO is a minimum three to six month process for most
people, so don't expect it to happen overnight. Personally I found it much
easier to make the transition once I had got to grips with the Event driven
paradigm of VARPG and the procedure support in VARPG/RPG IV.
