Look into the DDM function - Distributed Data Management allows files stored on 
a S36 to be
accessed by an attached 400 and visa versa, I am however unsure concerning 
multi-format
logicals that reside on the 400.  Maybe there is some method where you could 
access the
physical files that comprise the multi-format logical file and do some file 
group merge
#GSORT..  A group of files #GSORT'ed  into 1 file on the S36 is very simple.
