John Sears Appointed IBM Distinguished Engineer

April 10, 1998

John Sears, programming consultant, Advanced Technical Support,
Rochester, MN, has been appointed to the prestigious position of
IBM Distinguished Engineer, effective April 1, 1998.

As the subject matter expert in AS/400 architecture, design,
database management and performance, John currently serves as the
AS/400 technical adviser, reporting to Joe Harris in the Washington
Systems Center. In this position, John has been involved in key
AS/400 customer accounts including Budget Rent-A-Car and USA Today.
He joined IBM 30 years ago and is a member of the IBM Academy of
Technology. He has been the subject of a cover story in COMMON
magazine on AS/400, and he developed the Client/Server
Considerations and Performance Guidelines for AS/400.

Congratulations to John for his outstanding accomplishment! North
America Technical Support is proud that the high level of technical
competency within its ranks has been acknowledged and rewarded with
this honor.

In 1996, IBM created the IBM Distinguished Engineer position, a
career appointment to (Band D) Executive. This recognition is
awarded to the top technicians within IBM to reward a sustained
record of being a hands-on "top technical expert." They
demonstrate the ability to provide technical leadership to senior
technical staff members or certified technical professionals of
large, complex projects for product development, global services or
customer solutions to successfully compete in the marketplace.

An IBM Distinguished Engineers is -

- a uniquely skilled and experienced technical individual,
- the most asked-for person by customers and IBMers,
- the person you seek for advice, leadership and approval on your
most complex proposals,
- the one with a wide range of experience across multiple customer
sets,
- the technical leader of difficult integration projects,
- the one who is a management consultant,
- the person called in critical situations,
- the role model of others in their organization.
