Doooh! What is _UP_ with this??!! Is the "6% increase warrants a job change"
rule no longer in force? I've had good people lately (_NEVER_ at a client
site, BTW) that I tell about new jobs and, despite the fact that their
employer is downsizing and the long-term nature of _their_ job is suspect,
refuse to change because "it's not enough". How darn much is _ENOUGH_? I
couldn't even find a _consultant_ that was willing to spend 6 weeks in Texas
(airfare home _paid_ every two weeks) to have a one-year contract working from
home!

I realize that "family values" and spending more time at home are in vogue,
but c'mon -- YOU CAN'T HANDLE SIX FRIGGIN' WEEKS OUT OF TOWN???!!! FOR A
_GUARANTEED_ CONTRACT AT HOME? Why the _HECK_ did you get into this business,
then? Yes, constant travel sucks. We _ALL_ hate it, and there's no way
around it. But the majority of today's potential IS employees want to make
"the big bucks" _AND_ not travel, and work only 8-5. Not gonna' happen.

I look back at my forebears, and wonder just what has happened to our society
here in the US. I had a Grandfather that _walked_ from Little Rock, AR to
Jefferson City, MO to find a job during the depression -- he spent over a year
there, sending his money back home to his wife (and no phone service). My own
father spent 3 months at a time incommunicado under water in the USN submarine
service for six years (SSBN's weren't exactly allowed free contact during the
cold war) and found out about the birth of my brother two weeks after the
fact. My own six-month stint at SSA's Chicago office, flying home every
weekend, pales by comparison. SIX
WEEKS! A pittance... Errrrrrrr!

SOAPBOX MODE(*OFF) (and the crowd goes WILD!)

Regards!
