I'm not one to defend Micro$oft, but... NT Server 4.0 on a stable hardware
platform running server applications runs quite nicely. I admit that it is
NOT an AS/400, but it holds its own.

A "stable" hardware platform does mean $$$. I'm talking about Compaq
Proliants, Dell PowerServers, etc. All ECC memory (64Meg minimum 128Meg
preferred), redundant power supplies and RAID5 disk. I wouldn't add this
single point of failure to my LAN if it was running on Bob's Basement
Pentium that I picked up at a computer show for $1200 - with apologies to
Bob.

Most of the folks I know are going to any lengths to avoid putting MS in the
middle. Think about it. Do you want a critical link in your access to
spontaneouly crash multiple times a day?

We're looking for a secure way to permit our users to gain
interactive access to our AS/400 via the Internet.

After reading the promotional material for Microsoft's SNA Server, it
appears to be a viable solution:

 Client <------Internet------>NT Server 4.0<-----LAN------>AS/400
                    (TCP/IP) & (SNA)
                                            SNA Server 3.0

 Anybody doing this?

 Any gothcas?

What kind of encrytion is occurring between the client and the SNA
 Server? PPTP?

 Any other alternative solutions?

 Thanks.
