We use named constant to identify function keys and the INFDS of the wst file
to retreive the key pressed.

EXAMPLE

...
F aat9988d cf e workstn infds(infds)
...
 d @f1 c const(X'31')
 d @f2 c const(X'32')
 d @f3 c const(X'33')
 d @f4 c const(X'34')
...
 d infds ds
 d @kprss 369 369
...
c dow @kprss <> @F3
...
c if @kprss = @F12
...
This way, you can also assign name to the enter key (@enter), the rolls keys
(@rollUp @rollDw), the print key ...

I am about to learn again. *sigh*

OK, I'll bite. How else would one do it? In the DDS for the screen? I
mean, somewhere don't I have to count keys on the keyboard? Is there a way
to avoid it?
