For what it's worth, you can build an index for a subfile.

Now if the subfile is being loaded in the order you would have indexed it, you 
can binary halve it, if not, as you write records to the subfile, also output 
entries to an indexed data queue containing the index data and subfile record 
number..

To retrieve a subfile entry, first set the key and read your data queue then 
use the record number to get your subfile record.

BTW, in the situation mentioned (data entry of text), we would write a screens 
worth +1 of blank records to the subfile (forces *MORE) and do same each time 
rollup was pressed.  Process all records of current screen to obtain blank 
lines (SFLNXTCHG will not read blank lines unless overkeyed).  We also added a 
field to the notes file for
print/display which contained a skip before value so we wouldn't have to store 
those blank lines.
