Gary,

   What you are seeing is temporary object space growing.  If you look
at some of your jobs (Queries are the worst offender) by doing a
WRKACTJOB, selecting a job (using 5), and then displaying the "Run
attributes" option 3, you will see Temporary storage used for each job. 
This is just one of the things effecting your Current Unprotected used. 
An other use of this area is going to be Temporarily decompressed
objects.  When the 400 decompresses any objects that are compressed, its
copy is placed in this temporary storage area.
