While this is probably not your case,  I have had fields emptied
unexpectedly, too.  On a few sparse occasions it turned out that someone
had solved their problem by using B for blank-after in column 39 of an
Output spec.  

My real question though is:  why are you deriving YY, MM, & DD from UDATE? 
Why not just use *YEAR, UYEAR, UMONTH, & UDAY in the first place?
