This sounds like yet another "trust me I work for IBM" SE line.  All you
need to do is a low level format.  I would guess he was trying to do you
out of your drives.

        Back when I was doing the F35 -> 510 upgrade, the SE that was
helping 
        me removed the load-source drives from the F35 and told me that
they 
        could be reformatted and used in a PC... but they needed a
special 
        formatting program (that he had, of course).  He offered to
reformat 
        all 4 of them, if he could keep 2.
