I too am finding the language rat race to be a train without a
conductor. I looked at 'C' but before I got comfortable with it along
comes VisualBasic and now it's all to be surpassed by Java. Lets not
forget the ILE's and other visuals. The costs required in compilers, PC
upgrades, TRAINING, etc. are making this all prohibitive. My biggest
issue may be in the support of multiple languages in one shop. IBM
makes a big point of using the 400 as a server and the economies of
system managment of one box vs external platforms. This logic is not
being followed in the languages. Now should I skip over Java because
the next super language is just around the corner? Has anyone ever done
a study to see if my end users are more production in a GUI environment
over the green screen (Windows is NOT the ultimate model). Show me the
$$$ bottom line. It wasn't that many years ago that many ventured into
fast path development, 4GLs (Synon, etc.), and remember SSA. I never
saw any of them get more than spotted acceptance.
