Can't really comment on IBM's intentions but can definitely comment on the
marketplace as it is being driven. As a technical recruiter, I spend about
60% of my time exclusively in the AS/400 RPG arena. While Y2K is definitely
having an impact on the market for RPG professionals, other language
disciplines such as mainframe COBOL are being hit much harder.

I go where my clients take me, and I have a lot of them demanding my help in
finding qualified programmers, analysts, even managers. I am seeing the
hottest demand right now for P/A's with native RPG/400 and ILE skills, with
specialties such as JDE, CASE tools, BPCS, EDI, etc. lagging not far behind.
The hottest demands are in the small manufacturing and light
financial/insurance arenas, in relation to industry types.

No question - the AS/400 platform stability and reliability is so attractive
to client companies that I anticipate it being around for quite some time.
