Greg,

Funny that you should bring up record matching just as it was beginning
to resurface into my consciousness from the murk underneath. A couple of
months ago we had a debate over DOW vs. DOU <SFX - cries of "Oh no! Not
again!" from midrange-l multitude> in which I distinguished myself, to
the huge amusement of John Carr, by publishing a code example with a
blatant infinite loop. :-)

In retaliation I posted a standard record matching program (using DOW)
and challenged the DOU pundits to demonstrate how they would code the
same program. The only reasonable alternatives submitted were RPG cycle
MR logic programs, and one suggestion to use a logical file that
completely missed the point. John Carr did promise to submit a DOU based
example, but either he never did or it was one of several midrange-l
messages that seem to have missed my mail basket recently, in which case
I apologise to him.

Leaving aside the DOW/DOU debate <SFX - sighs of relief from midrange-l>
the program I published then would be a perfect fit for your particular
situation. It might not quite touch the speed of the RPG cycle MR logic,
but would certainly be much more efficient than your chaining technique.
I won't inflict it on midrange-l again, but if you missed it then and
would like to see it just mail me.
