Dear Doug,

Hopefully this information conforms to midrange-l guidelines about information
from vendors. We manufacture a twinax printer interface that converts IPDS to
the HP PCL language. We have learned from providing customer support on this
product about one special item that is required to properly print MICR
applications to IPDS capable printers.

One of the excellent features of IBM's IPDS concept is that it allows the
printer to describe for the AS/400 all of the features that it currently
supports. Support for MICR printing is a specific answer that needs to be sent
from the print device back to the AS/400. By default the answer is assumed to
be a negative (no MICR support) for an AFP capable printer. If you are planning
on testing multiple types of IPDS capable printers; you will find that your
application could be held in the output queue, or if using the AS/400 MICR host
based fonts that the fonts will not be downloaded, when the test printer
reports to the AS/400 no support for MICR printing.

I hope this information may be useful to you during your testing.

/Paul

Has anyone on this list set this up for themselves in house?

We're evaluating two vendors in addition to doing it ourselves.
I can create an overlay form for the checks. I have a supplier for
the MICR enabled printer which includes the font(s) and is an
AFP printer and I have a supplier for the check stock.

What, if anything am I missing?
