We use the ESS/400 product, which utilizes an APPC connect.  We've found it
to be FAR faster than even the fastest ODBC.  ESS provides extensions for
common PC programming languages (we use MS/Access, Visual Basic, and
PowerBuilder Enterprise).  I THINK that it even provides record locking, but
I'm not sure on that one.  You can visit their web site at www.ess400.com.  I
have no financial interest in the company, although I wish that I did -- it's
a GREAT product!
