  • Subject: RE: Personal vs Mailing List Responses....

On the topic of quoting entire emails, this is my biggest complaint with
this list. I am on three different mailing lists, two of which are on
animals, and this one. I rarely see the problem of quoting entire emails
on the other two, but *frequently* see it here, and we are supposed to be
computer professionals!

While the convoluted method of dialing in from home to AS/400 to 6000 is a
problem I can appreciate, I doubt its the reason behind most ofl the full
quotes I've seen since I joined. (Correct me if I'm wrong!) At one point
there was a discussion (I think it was on lack of future CISC releases)
and one person quoted the full text copy of a response letter from IBM. I
got at least two other emails which included the full letter quoted.
That's just one example, but the rest of you are getting the same posts I
do, so I won't give others.

It sure is. David apparently emails them out periodically (first of every
month I think), which meant that I didn't get a set for several weeks after
I joined. The other two lists sent their guidelines as soon as I joined.
David's guidelines state:

"When quoting messages, do not quote the entire message. Just quote the
parts that are needed to make the appropriate references."

as well as
"Keep to the subject. The topic of the echo is Midrange Systems."

And being that I am discussing the list and not Midrange Systems I am
going to stop now! It would probably be more appropriate to send
complaints on things like this directly to David, who could address the
list without starting a general discussion. [David, comments??]

Thanks for listening,
Ilena Ayala
