Subject: Is anyone using ILE?

I am curious how many people are actually using ILE to develop their
applications. I have several questions:

Are you using RPG IV or ILE COBOL? If so, are you just experimenting or are
you developing all of your new code in RPG IV or ILE COBOL?
I am using RPG IV (and CLLE) only.
Are you just taking PDM option 14 (CRTBNDRPG or CRTBNDCBL) to compile your
RPG IV and ILE COBOL programs or are you using PDM option 15 (CRTRPGMOD or
CRTCBLMOD) to create modules, followed by a CRTPGM to bind the modules into
a program object.
This depends upon the complexity of the program. If I am using only a few
modules/service programs/
binding directories or overrides I use prompted option 14. If it is a large
program I will create a CL
to perform all the steps, otherwise I will compile all the modules with option
14 then prompt for CRTPGM. For multiple compiles during a session, I then go to
the command entry screen and F9 the various steps.
Are you using service programs?
I use one "user-written" service program per application (appSRVLIB/appSRVPGM).
I create a binding directory for the modules and then create a CL program that
recreates the binding directory and then
creates the service program. (I have also used IBM's http service programs.)
Are you running your RPG IV code in the default activation group or are you
using named activation groups, *NEW, or *CALLER?
I use either QILE or an application name activation group for top-level
(mostly) CL programs.
For all others I use *CALLER, though I can see a use for *NEW.
Are you using binding directories?
Yes, depending upon the complexity of the program.
Are you using binder language?
Not at this time.
And finally, are you using data management scoping?
I am still learning how and when to use this feature.
I'll try to tabulate the results of this survey. Thanks in advance for your
responses.
