That's true.  In fact, the hardware has been subsidizing the software for
years.  It's just been tough for the vendors to convince the users to pay
more for the "intangible" portion than for the part they could depreciate,
had trade-in value, and could sell in a pinch.  So, the vendors raised the
price of the hardware and "gave away" the software.  Now that hardware
pricing pressures have found their way out of the PC market into the
midrange/server market, the vendors have no choice but to start charging for
the software...
