The old way was to have sorted sequential files.  The current way is to have
keyed files.  I presume there is a reason why you aren't doing this.

You could write your own search routine depending on the data.  It could be
too slow to read every record for the position to so you might want to play
the high-low game and read by rrn halfway each time.  eg. for 1,000 records,
you would read record 500, compare, then read 250 or 750, compare, etc.

A position-to function is the most common request I get.
