This post in MIDRANGE-L got me to thinking ... anyone know what the
average tenure of a technology worker (System i or other) is these days?

I'm just a few days shy of 10 years at my current job ... longest I've
ever been at a single company. Before I came here (MKS) I didn't stay
more than 3 years at any one company. I kind of always was in 'looking
for a new job' mode.

Any thoughts?

I have a thought stream on this --

I passed the 7-year mark here in February. This is the longest I've ever stayed at any job, usually going elsewhere right about the 5-year mark. One job ended earlier than that due to a plant closure; another ended due to "going out of business".

A couple of the remaining times I went elsewhere because something else looked too interesting to pass up. The rest I left due to management changes that just didn't suit me.

July of this year will be my 33rd anniversary of getting paid for work in the industry.

This job doesn't have some of the best non-monetary aspects that a few of the other jobs have had, but it's strong in other non-monetary aspects and pays pretty well too. So far, management has not gone in a direction I can't easily adapt to. (Came close a couple years ago for a couple months, but top management "fixed" the problem.) And it would've been hard to find another job where I could've reported directly to Carol Woodbury for a solid year.

I might go somewhere else someday. At the moment, there just is no reason to.
